1. Project Overview

The Malaysian cable non-excavation laying project crosses the Lumut Bay estuary in Malaysia, laying a Φ610mm pipe with a construction horizontal distance of 1250m and a crossing depth of 26m below sea level. Due to the chaotic distribution of sand and silt in the area and the complex geological conditions, the construction party chose the XuGong XZ5000 horizontal directional drilling rig for construction.

2. Drilling Equipment Configuration

The project uses 168, 140 drilling rods, equipped with a 172 mud motor for directional drilling. For hole expansion, a combination of Φ450mm to Φ900mm cutting and bucket-type hole expanders is used for construction.

3. Construction Technology

Directional Drilling: Directional drilling is assisted by double casing. First, a 16-inch casing is used to isolate the weak strata and seawater seepage of the soil entry inclination section. Then, according to the designed curve, directional drilling is carried out to approach the horizontal position, pushing the 12-inch casing along the drilling rod through the 16-inch casing, and continuing until close to the horizontal position. After the casing is lowered, continue drilling according to the designed trajectory until the drill bit emerges from the ground.

Hole Expansion: Hole expansion is carried out using a combination of cutting and bucket-type hole expanders. The cutting-type hole expanders are divided into four levels: Φ450mm, Φ600mm, Φ750mm, Φ900mm, with the outer diameter of the bucket-type hole expanders used in combination being slightly smaller by 50mm.

Pipe Pulling: During pipe pulling, the front end of the pipe is connected to a Φ700mm bucket-type hole expander. Due to the limited layout of the pipe, the pipe needs to be pulled back in five sections, requiring four weldings.

4. Directional Drilling in Complex Formations

The double casing assistance measures, where the 16-inch large casing is mainly used to isolate the complex strata and seawater at the soil entry section, and the small casing is mainly used to limit the bending space of the drilling rod to prevent the drilling rod from breaking. Large drilling rigs can usually use the power head to drive the casing to rotate and advance.

At the same time, two specifications of drilling rods are used in combination: 140 drilling rods in front to improve the inclination efficiency; 168 drilling rods behind to ensure the strength of the bending section of the drilling rod and prevent accidents of drilling rod breakage.

Mud Preparation Plan

Since the project is constructed by the sea, the strata contain more calcium, magnesium, and other ionic components, so the mud additives require pure alkali and caustic soda to remove calcium and magnesium ions from seawater. At the same time, because the strata are interlaced with sand layers and silt layers, the strata stability is poor, so the mud additives also need positive electrostatic glue and wall protection agents to facilitate hole formation and protect the hole wall, with the pumped mud viscosity not less than 50S.

Pipe Segmented Pulling

In ordinary engineering construction, the pipe is尽可能 completed in one pull back. If the pipe is pulled back in segments, it will increase the risk of construction, especially when the strata are complex and the mud performance is not ideal, it is easy to cause hole collapse and pipe clamping accidents.

However, facing more than 1200 meters of rivers, the construction party can only choose to pull back in segments, which requires very high requirements for equipment performance parameters and technological methods.

This pipe pulling is divided into five sections, requiring four weldings. To ensure construction safety, during welding, mud is pumped into the hole every 20-30 minutes to keep the drill hole always full of high-quality mud, effectively preventing the occurrence of hole collapse accidents.

Recently, the concrete lining of the TBM tunnel section of the diversion tunnel of the San Gaván Hydropower Station in Peru was completed, and the construction of the project reached another major milestone. The my country Railway Construction Heavy Industry TBM used in this project is the first open TBM exported by China to South America. During the construction process, it created an excellent record of more than 1,000 meters of footage per month. The Peruvian San Gaván Hydropower Station is a representative project of the “Belt and Road” initiative in South America and the first power project invested by a Chinese company in Peru. The total installed capacity of the San Gaván Hydropower Station is 209.3 MW, with a designed annual power generation of 1.25 billion kWh. The tunnel section length of this project is 9,200 meters, with a designed uphill angle of 3.3% and full-section support required. The working environment is extremely rare. The TBM produced by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. has overcome difficulties and maintained a very high integrity rate during construction. The equipment has been launched since February 2022. The maximum single-shift footage exceeds 26 meters, the maximum daily footage reaches 46 meters, the highest monthly footage reaches 1007.9 meters, and the average monthly footage is 438 meters. The tunnel was successfully completed in November 2023.

In Latin American and Caribbean countries, in addition to the “sunflowers” blooming in Peru, China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Co., Ltd.’s tunnel boring machines are also exported to countries and regions such as Chile and Colombia to help local subway and municipal pipeline construction. In addition, China Railway Construction Heavy Industry’s gravel production lines, concrete wet spraying machines, railway turnouts, fasteners, rail grinding wheels and other products have also been exported to Latin American and Caribbean countries.

In October 2024, 609 graders of various types were sold, a year-on-year increase of 27.9%, of which 83 units were sold domestically, a year-on-year increase of 22.1%; exports were 526 units, a year-on-year increase of 28.9%.

Automobile cranes

According to statistics from the China Construction Machinery Industry Association on major automobile crane manufacturers,

In October 2024, 1,237 automobile cranes of various types were sold, a year-on-year decrease of 15%, of which 521 units were sold domestically, a year-on-year decrease of 46.7%; exports were 716 units, a year-on-year increase of 49.5%.

Crawler crane

According to statistics from the China Construction Machinery Industry Association on major crawler crane manufacturers,

In October 2024, 196 crawler cranes of various types were sold, a year-on-year decrease of 20.3%, of which 63 were sold domestically, a year-on-year decrease of 41.1%; and 133 were exported, a year-on-year decrease of 4.32%.

Truck crane

According to statistics from the China Construction Machinery Industry Association on major truck crane manufacturers,

In October 2024, 1,730 truck cranes of various types were sold, a year-on-year increase of 10.6%, of which 1,492 were sold domestically, a year-on-year increase of 23.8%; and 238 were exported, a year-on-year decrease of 33.7%.

Tower crane

According to statistics from the China Construction Machinery Industry Association on major tower crane manufacturers,

In October 2024, 353 tower cranes of various types were sold, a year-on-year decrease of 71.9%, of which 240 were sold domestically, a year-on-year decrease of 78.6%; and 113 were exported, a year-on-year decrease of 16.3%.

Industrial vehicles

According to statistics from the China Construction Machinery Industry Association on major forklift manufacturers,

98,582 forklifts of all types were sold in October 2024, a year-on-year increase of 0.44%. Among them, domestic sales were 60,570 units, a year-on-year decrease of 5.99%; exports were 38,012 units, a year-on-year increase of 12.7%.

Road rollers

According to statistics from the China Construction Machinery Industry Association on major road roller manufacturers,

Road roller sales in October were 974 units, a year-on-year decrease of 4.32%

974 road rollers of all types were sold in October 2024, a year-on-year decrease of 4.32%, of which domestic sales were 394 units, a year-on-year decrease of 9.43%; exports were 580 units, a year-on-year decrease of 0.51%.

Paving machine

According to the statistics of the main paver manufacturers of the China Construction Machinery Industry Association,

85 paving machines of various types were sold in October 2024, a year-on-year decrease of 9.57%, of which 58 were sold domestically, a year-on-year decrease of 14.7%; and 27 were exported, a year-on-year increase of 3.85%.

Lifting work platform

According to the statistics of the main lifting work platform manufacturers of the China Construction Machinery Industry Association,

10,934 lifting work platforms of various types were sold in October 2024, a year-on-year decrease of 12.8%, of which 5,391 were sold domestically, a year-on-year decrease of 26.3%; and 5,543 were exported, a year-on-year increase of 6.33%.

Aerial work vehicle

According to the statistics of the main aerial work vehicle manufacturers of the China Construction Machinery Industry Association,

306 aerial work vehicles of various types were sold in October 2024, a year-on-year increase of 11.3%, of which 273 were sold domestically, the same as the same period last year; and 33 were exported, an increase of 31 units year-on-year.
